{"id":4356,"date":"2021-04-13T19:16:57","date_gmt":"2021-04-13T19:16:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thestorytraveller.co.uk\/blog\/?p=4356"},"modified":"2021-04-13T19:16:57","modified_gmt":"2021-04-13T19:16:57","slug":"hamnet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thestorytraveller.co.uk\/blog\/?p=4356","title":{"rendered":"Hamnet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I mentioned in a previous blog that I had just read <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Hamnet<\/strong> <\/span>by <strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Maggie O&#8217;Farrell<\/span> <\/strong>&#8211; we are discussing it at Book Club tomorrow. I found the book compelling, intriguing and was totally entranced from the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>For me it had echoes of a book we read at Book Club a few years ago and that was <strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Song of Achilles<\/span> <\/strong>by Madeline Miller. Both O&#8217;Farrell and Miller took stories we all grew up with (Greek Myths and Shakespeare&#8217;s life ) but actually don&#8217;t know that much the tales about apart from the received wisdom passed on down to us. They both treated some of the characters with sympathy and gave them much more fully dimensioned characters. O&#8217;Farrell certainly develops the character of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Agnes<\/strong> <\/span>and gives her a hearing that history has denied her. I am trying not to spoil the plot to any potential readers out there but\u00a0the ending is emotional!<\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t read anything else by <strong>O&#8217;Farrell<\/strong> but I certainly will now.<\/p>\n<p>Quiz on some of <strong>Shakespeare&#8217;s Characters<\/strong>. (if you know Shakespeare it shouldn&#8217;t be that difficult although <strong>e<\/strong> might stretch you!)<\/p>\n<p>a) Who finally<span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong> killed Macbeth<\/strong><\/span>?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 b) <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Who was the fat, good humoured braggart<\/strong> <\/span>in Shakespeare&#8217;s Henry lV and the Merry wives of Windsor?\u00a0 c) What is the name of the <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong>ghost that haunts<\/strong> <strong>Macbeth<\/strong><\/span>?\u00a0\u00a0 d) What was <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Romeo&#8217;s surname<\/strong><\/span>?\u00a0\u00a0 e) in Julius Caesar what are the <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>names of the wives of Caesar and Brutus<\/strong><\/span>?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I mentioned in a previous blog that I had just read Hamnet by Maggie O&#8217;Farrell &#8211; we are discussing it at Book Club tomorrow.
